| Brief Background |
The Transvaal, so called because it was situated beyond the Vaal river, as seen
from the Cape of Good Hope, included the homelands of
Gazankulu,
Venda,
Lebowa,
KwaNdebele,
KaNgwane and the Eastern enclaves of
Bophuthatswana.
In 1994, it was reorganized into the new provinces of Mpumalanga (Eastern Transvaal), Limpopo (Northern Transvaal) and Northwest (Western Transvaal). | ||
