Ciskei was one of the four so-called "independent" homelands having
been granted independence in 1981 by South Africa. However, this independence was
not recognized by any country in the world.Ciskei was the largest unsegmented homeland in south-eastern Cape Province, today's Eastern Cape.
It ceased to exist as a political entity on 27. April 1994 and has been incorporated into South Africa. Its flag and license plates are no longer in use.
