Mauritius became indenpendent from Great Britain in 1968. Rodrigues Island is an autonomous outer island of the Republic of Mauritius about 560 kilometres (348 miles) east of Mauritius. The island used to be its tenth district but gained autonomous status on December 10, 2002 and is governed by the Rodrigues Regional Assembly.
